General Management Information Protocol CMIP is an ISO protocol parallel with General Management Information Services CMIS, supports information exchange services between network management applications and management agents. CMIS defines a network management information service system. The CMIP interface supports ISO and define the user-defined management protocol. The CMIP specification in the TCP / IP network is called CMOT (ie CMIP over TCP); and the version in the IEEE 802 LAN is called Cmol (ie CMIP over LLC). In addition, CMIP / CMIS is proposed as a competitive protocol for Simple Network Management Protocol SNMP as a TCP / IP Protocol Group.

The CMIP uses reliable ISO (ISO-RELIABLE) to connect to the connection transport mechanism and built-in security mechanism, which features access control, authentication, and security logs (SECURITY LOGS). Managed Objects is responsible for exchange management information between network management applications and management agents. Management objects have features that can be monitored, modified or controlled, and can complete various jobs.

CMIP does not provide a provision for network management application functions, only defined information exchange mechanisms for management objects, including the use and description of information.
