Install Linux via FTP (2004.8.4)
Through two days, more than ten times, I finally install Mandrake successfully in FTP.
Environment: A P4 (Win2K) as an FTP server, one S450 (the old machine that has eliminated in the laboratory is patching up, the optical drive will try 6, before I found it, huh, I used to do the test Linux. It is worth a value.)
At first, the Mandrake10, RH9, Fedoracore2, and Turbolinux7 were online from the campus online Down, and the ETINUX CD of ETINUX.
1. I spent 15 minutes of CD directly installing Easylinux, very smooth (this place to praise Easylinux, a disc, easy to install, is suitable for learning, do not have a cumbersome disorder in installation, but there are not many Pakage available. Just integrate several commonly used), indicating that my S450 can still work.
2. Do not want to burn the disc (13 light discs). Look at the individual installation instructions: Mandrake, RH, Fedora support network (FTP, HTTP, NFS), but the difference is: Mandrake, RH can use floppy disk to boot, start network installation; Fedora does not support, it can only use boot.iso When you are recorded into an CD to start the installer. Then in the later FTP installation process, Mandrake and Rh have problems, sometimes RH simply can't find the FTP server, so it is intended to test a few times in Mandrake. (Stealing: Linux network installation steps are also small, so I can tell one, others should be sympathy, friends find different points, please don't point out)
3. Set the FTP server: This EASY, not much, first load Mandrake's ISO with a virtual drive, then find a FTPServer software, point to the loaded virtual optical drive. Note to find a software that replaces the virtual optical drive because it is replaced in four ISOs (equivalent to using the exit of the CD-ROM drive, putting the procedure ... These operations), the occasion of Virtual deamon, very comfortable J
4. Making Installation Boot: Mandrake's DOSUTILS in the first iOS (Rawwrite is made under DOS, Rawrite is used for UNIX / Linux), which will create a floppy program, select the IMG file (in root directory In the Image folder, select the NetWork.img file here, then execute "Write" is.
Briefly illustrate the IMG file under the image folder (see them is 1.4M, just a floppy disk):
CDROM.IMG - Used for floppy start installation, source program in CDROM (think this is nothing to find? Since the optical drive can be used, why not directly drive the CD-ROM? Ha);
Network.img - Used for floppy start installation, source program in network (FTP, HTTP, NFS server);
PCMCIA.IMG - Used to have a floppy drive without a built-in optical drive, a floppy disk launch installation, source program in an external optical drive or network (FTP, HTTP, NFS server); network_drivers.img-- is not an installer, just a network The installation is the network card driver (the network installation must be.).
5. Making a network driver: Just said, use the previous method, choose NetWork_Drivers.img.
6. OK! Start the installation, start the S450 with a floppy disk with NetWork.img, will enter the Text installation mode (Network installation does not support graphics mode), then automatically find the network card, then put it in the floppy disk of NetWork_Drivers.img, load the network card driver If there are multiple NICs on the machine, there will be a "please choose ..." interface, select one to continue;
There is also an exception here: If you already have Mandrake on your machine, graphics mode will appear through FTP installation.
7. Configure IP addresses: Because it is a laboratory, there is no DHCP server, so I chose Static (Configure Static IP Address). To write four items: Normal IP (202.202.42.78), DSN server address (202.202.32.33), Note: If DNS can't fill, if you fill in, Mandrake will keep looking for DNSSERVER, no empty bar; The gateway address (202.202.42.65), finally the subnet mask (202.202.42.224).
If DNS is blank, you will also need to fill in the host name and domain name, and fill in a favorite thing (of course, you can also blank).
8. Configure the FTP server IP address and resource path: Total 6 items: Fill my P4 machine's IP behind the ftpserver; Mandrake Linux Directory: Air or write a "/", of course, if your FTP server is not set For the root path of FTP, here to change it. 4 items, there is a fill, not empty.
Why do you want to be like this: because Linux is open source, the FTP server on the network is all, you can fill in the FTPServer on the network without having to DOWN to this machine. At this point, the username, password, the address of the proxy server, the port is needed.
9. Once OK, it will get the following files and resource lists by FTP, and press "Alt F"

"
You can completely see every step of the installation, all Linux you see will also record in the log file. At this time, I will also see 202.202.42.78 in my P4, I will be relieved, and I have been halfway.
Tips: Alt F1 returns to the first terminal, the installation interface.
10. Select the package to install;
11. Start installation: At this time, finally switch to the third terminal (Alt F3), don't sleep, because this process also needs your manual operation: replace the disc. I have no success few times and I will run out to buy the ice cream. I will stop and prompt when I replace the disc, but I have a wrong. From the third terminal, you can see what package gets from the FTP server, which disc (carefully observed * getfile *** cd1). When you install more than 60%, it will become (* getfile *** cd2), and the words get Failed *** appear; at this time, the virtual optical drive on FTPSERVER is replaced with the second ISO, waiting for Mandrake Return GetFile again. And in the first terminal, there is no prompt, just a warning will appear when it fails multiple times: You can't get a Pakage, continue? Or exit? Select NO, exit until the original - don't do this; choose Yes, then this package is ignored, continue to look for the package on the next CD2, if you haven't changed the virtual drive, then a warning again. Only this screen? Sorry, I don't have a good way, just seeing there is a changeisk.img on ISO2, thinking is the file you need to replace the disc, and make a floppy disk, put it, but it seems to have no effect, and I don't see the stop GetFile. And ask for a removal prompt.
12. If your luck is good, and the action is timely, I will enter the XFree configuration dialog box after installation, this is not in this topic, not much. But I still want to prompt: Don't make it happy to find your graphics card, don't choose it, unless you have a graphics card's Linux driver. Insurance, or choose one of the lower XFree, so that you can guarantee first to go to XWindow.
13. Restart, end.
One thing I want to discuss with everyone, I have copied 4 ISO content to a directory under the FTP, so that this can avoid manual replacement of virtual optical drive, but there is no success, still find 60%, when you die, I don't know like this. Can you?
In addition, what is ChangeDisk.img, knowing the brethren telling, thank you first.
Write very much, everyone forgive me.
