The Finger belongs to the user information protocol, provides an interface with the remote user information program interface (RUIP). Finger is a protocol based on the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) using TCP port 79. Establish a TCP connection to the remote machine in the Finger port. RUIP is therefore ready to process requests for remote terminals. This machine is sent to RUIP a online query based on a Finger query, and waits for RUIP response. RUIP receives and processes these query information, and returns the end connection after returns; this unit stops the transmit signal after the receiving reply, and then stop the terminal connection.

Finger shows user information, and this information is sensitive information. Security administrators should make a clear decision on whether or not to run the finger and in response.
