1 VSS Overview Version Control is an important aspect of workgroup software development, which prevents unexpected file loss, allowing reverse tracking to earlier versions, and branch, merge, and manage versions. The control of the source code is useful when the software development and the two versions of files are required to compare two versions of the file or to find an earlier version. Visual SourceSafe is a source code control system that provides comprehensive version and configuration management capabilities, as well as security and tracking check features. The VSS is based on project development management by depositing related project documents (including text files, image files, binary files, sound files, video files) into the database. Users can share files quickly and efficiently as needed. Once the file is added to the VSS, each change will be recorded, and the user can restore the early versions of the file. Other members of the project group can also see the latest version of the document, and modify them, VSS is also the same. Record new changes. You will also find that use VSS to organize management projects, making communication and cooperation between project groups easier and intuitive. VSS can be integrated with Visual Basic, Visual C , Visual J , Visual InterDev, Visual FoxPro development environment, and Microsoft Office applications, provides easy-to-use, project-oriented version control features. Visual SourceSafe can process any file types created by various development languages, creative tools, or applications. Today, today, users can work in document and project levels at the same time. Visual SourceSafe facing project-oriented features can manage the daily tasks in the workgroup application development work.

1.1 VSS files When you want to modify a document, you need to check it out from the database, or tell VSS you want to edit the document. VSS will get the copy of the document from the database to your work folder (Working Folder), you can modify your document. If other users want to modify the same document, VSS will generate a message, tell him that the document has been checked out, so that many people will modify the document simultaneously to ensure the security of the document. When you complete the modification, you need to check the document in VSS. This operation is copied from your working folder (Working Folder) and put it back into the VSS database so that other users can see the changes in documents in time. VSS can save all changes to the document and display the latest version, and the earlier version is also tracked. VSS uses the anti-incremental technology, only requires very few disk spaces to make the user get all versions of the document. If you don't modify the document, you can execute the undo check out command, the document will be saved as the status before check out (Check Out). If you only need to read a document, you don't need to edit it, you can perform the Removal (GET) command, put your document into your work folder, then choose View Document (View) to view your documentation. version.

1.2 Projects in VSS refers to the collection of all files stored in the VSS database in the VSS database. Users can add (add), delete (delete), edit (edit), edit (edit), edit (edit), edit, edit, and share. A "Project" is largely similar to a folder of a general system, which is different to better support file merge (Archive) and version control. The file is saved in the project (Project) in the VSS database. You do not have to manage the original files stored in VSS unless you want to check or compare with other copies. VSS provides a backup file to the Working Folder for each user for users to view and edit the file. Although there is no working folder, you can also view files, but you must really implement the processing of the document, you must establish a work folder. 1.3 VSS version control function VSS can save multiple versions of the file, including each slight change between file versions. The version control has the following contents: L groups Co-group - in the default, one file only allows a user to modify it at a certain time, which prevents files from being accidentally changed or covered by other users . But administrators can change this default setting, allowing file multiple layers to check out. This setting can also prevent excessive, unnecessary changes. l Version Tracking - VSS can be tracked for the source code and other files to track the early versions of the rebuild files. l Cross-platform development - Under the case of multi-platform development, version tracking is used to maintain core code. l The reuse of the code - tracking program benchmarks make the code reuse.

1.4 Splitting and Sharing of Files You can implement a file by multiple project sharing in VSS. Changes to files in a project can be automatically reflected in other shared projects. This is advocating code reuse. In Properties in the File menu, click Link, you can view the sharing of a file. The BRANCH is the process of separating the file from the originally shared project. It allows VSS to track files from different paths. Note: In other version of the control system, the branch is implemented by tracking version numbers. For example: version "2.3.9.2" is the ninth branch of the second revision of version 2.3. VSS implements tracking of file branches by apparent different project names. The split file is disconnected to disconnect the shared connection, so that the files in this project have nothing to do with other originally shared projects. Modifications to this file will not be reflected to other items. Split is created: Two documents have a common history, starting from achieving splitting, and their history will be tracked separately by VSS. After the file is split, the LINK will no longer display the disconnected connection, but you can use the path (Properties item in the File menu) to browse the split history. Share file is a connection to establish a file between multiple projects. The split (BRANCH) file is a different file path between the project.

1.5 Working Folder VSS is a tool for storing and managing files, but editing and compiling files must be done in the VSS specified folder. This folder is called a work folder, which can be an existing folder, or a new folder for VSS. The VSS browser shows the path of the file's work folder above the file list. In the VSS system, the work folder is where you really use the document. When you want to edit or modify a document, you must implement the CHECK OUT operation on the document (see 3.3.5 Modify and editing files), and VSS copies the document from the project and puts your work folder. When you modify and check in file, VSS re-copies the file to the database to record your changes.

Once you check out the file, VSS began to create and manage your work folder on your local machine. Each user, each item or each microcomputer can have its own work folder. If Joe works on project $ / spreadsheet and $ / WordProcessor, he has the corresponding 2 different work folders. If Hanna works on the same project, she has her own work folder for each project. When you set a work folder for a project, you can use it to place the 2 VSS client installation in your project.
