[CCID News] Open source code software vendor Red Hat announced this Monday to introduce the beta test version of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4 of Nahant.
This is also the first public beta test version of Red Hat's new generation of enterprise Linux operating system, and the first Linux 2.6 kernel RHEL. RHEL 4β version is a new generation of enterprise desktops, server operating systems for Red Hat.
According to RED HAT's spokesman, Red Hat expects the official version of RHEL 4 will be released in early 2005.
The RHEL 4β version contains an upgrade version of many major system components. 2.6.8 version of the Linux kernel is its foundation, GNOME 2.8 is the basis of its user interface. For office users, RHEL 4β is integrated with OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 Office software, Evolution 1.5.9 Email client, as well as Mozilla 1.7.2, Firefox 0.9.3, Epiphany 1.3.8 browser.
For developers, it integrates GCC 3.4.1 and GNU LiBC 2.3.3. Red Hat will track the defects in RHEL 4β by its bugzilla system.
RHEL 4β version supports most Red Hat hardware platforms, including 32-bit X86 architecture, 64-bit AMD64 and EM64T, Andten 2. It also supports IBM's 64-bit EServer Iseries, PSeries, Power, and IBM S / 390, Eserver Zseries Series large hosts.
