KDE developers announce that they will add a search function similar to Google style to simplify file search in this open source Linux desktop environment.
It is expected that the next version of the KDE that may be referred to as 3.4 or 4 will include a new feature search function, which is estimated to be released within 18 months. One of the KED developers Aaron Seigo revealed that developers discussed and prepared new search engines in Germany.
The new search engine will be built on the KDE existing search function and is included in the control panel. Seigo revealed: "We plan to establish a similar Google search system for the control panel, and you can still search through the file name." He pointed out that search files currently search for more than in the computer.
SEIGO said that the search tool will be included in the next version of KDE, but developers cannot guarantee the development of this tool. Improved search features may bring impact on Microsoft.
The improved search function is one of Microsoft's next-generation operating system Longhorn in 2007. The Longhorn program also includes a new way of file storage named "Windows Future Storage (Winfs)". Microsoft Website said that Winfs will change the user's way of searching files, regardless of application software creation.
Improved search functions is also one of the KDE plans to be strong. Developers want to simplify search processes. Three professional availability experts participated in the KDE program.
Seigo said, "Open source software has always been written for programmers." - Since the developer's design does not meet the needs of non-technical professional users, open source desktop software has always been more difficult to use.
Seigo doesn't know how Kde will become in the future, but he hopes that the interface can become more intuitive.
However, inside some open source groups believe that the Linux desktop environment does not have the ability to compete with Microsoft Windows desktop in terms of availability. Paul Salazar, European Marketing Director, Red Hat, said that it is not possible to compete with Microsoft in research and development budgets, he chooses Linux on the server instead of the desktop.
"We earned $ 125 million last year and invest 20% in R & D. Microsoft put $ 7 billion in R & D every year. We can't compare with it," Salazar said. (ZDNET China Zhang Yue)
