The difference between ArcSDE two connections

A database connection is required to use the space data in the database management system. There are two ways to establish a connection from ArcInfo to spatial data. One method is to connect to the ArcSDE service, generating a process on the server by this ArcSDE service, which processes the connection of ArcInfo and database instances.

The second method is a direct connection. In this connection method, ArcInfo is directly connected to the database server. It turns out that in the first middle connection method, the process of the process generated by the server side is now transferred to the client, which eliminates the intermediate layer. The direct connection method is a two-layer architecture instead of three layers. If spatial data is stored in Oracle8i or SQL Server, it can be connected by a direct connection method. When connecting to SQL Server, no additional software is required to connect to the database. If you are directly connected to Oracle8i, Oracle's client software requires an ORACLE service name to generate an Oracle service name for your server.
