IBM EXP300 disk array configuration

Server: IBM ESERVER X Series 235 Server

Array: IBM EXP300 Array Cabinet, IBM ServerRAID 4MX Control Card

1, hardware connection

Turn off the server, install the Serverraid card, connect the Serverraid card with the Array Cabinet with a dedicated cable.

Starting order: First open the array cabinet power supply, wait after the array cabinet is started, start the server.

IBM Serverraid offers several levels: RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 1E, RAID5, RAID5E. Where RAID 1E and RAID 5E are the proprietary RAID levels defined by IBM themselves.

RAID 0: Strip disk array, there is no fault tolerance, but all hard disk space can be used.

RAID 1: Disk image of two hard drives, allows bad, and the utilization rate is only half.

RAID 1E: Strip disk mirror, support two hard drives, allowing any broken hard drive, only half of space utilization.

RAID 5: Strip with parity, supports three or more hard drives, allowing any broken hard drive (more than 2 pieces will be lost), and the spatial utilization is (N-1) / n.

RAID 5E: It is equivalent to the RAID 5 plus the built-in hot backup disk, supports four or more hard drives, allowing for two (non-simultaneous) hard drives, and space utilization is (N-2) / n.

2, software environment

(1) You can press Ctrl i to enter the operation of the array, including the current state of each physical disk (online -onl, off-line-ddd, reconstruction, reconstruction). Any array) -rdy, hot-stand-HSP

(2) The configuration of the array can be configured with the Configuration program in the setup and installation of the IBM, or after the operating system is installed, install the ServerRAID Manager management program to configure.

When configuring the SETUP AND INSTALLATION CD, you need to start the machine with the disc, enter the Configuration Wizard (written with Java), follow the wizard's prompt, step by step, you can complete the configuration.

Regardless of the configuration, the configuration process is exactly the same. This article is used as an example of Serverraid Manager management software installed under Windows2000.

3, RAID creation

After the hardware connection is complete, start the array and server host, you can create and manage the array by management software. After running the ServerRaid Manager program, the initial interface is as follows:

It can be seen that the channel 1 of the array contains a hard disk of 70007MB (because it is a non-IBM brand, so the front is a yellow exclamation mark, which does not affect the use), because did not join any array, so 7 physical The current state of the disk is Ready.

We plan to create the most common RAID5 arrays. Right click on Arrays, then click the "Configure RAID" menu command to enter the Configuration Wizard window. We have 2 options for "Quick Configuration" and "Custom Configuration". If you select "Quick Configuration", click the "Next" button to use all the hard drives to create a RAID5 on a hot spare disk (HSP) Array-A, and create a logical drive Driver1. Since a plate is hot, there is a disk capacity to do data check, so the actual capacity of the logical drive Driver1 is the capacity of 5 hard drives 350035MB. At this time, in addition to the hot spare disk, the status of the other 6 physical hard disks is all turned to ONLINE.

If you select Custom Configuration, click the "Next" button to guide us to build Array-A, we can select the physical hard drive on the left side of the READY to join our disk. Here we can build several Array (A, B, C ...), or several hot spare plates. Of course there are only more than 3 hard drives allow the RAID5 level drive to be established. Of course, not all physical hard drives must be added to the disc group, which can be determined by the situation. Here I chose to establish a RAID5 level drive with 4 hard drives, and do not build hot-standby hard drives.

Click the Next button to see several RAID Level to choose, we choose RAID level 5.

Click the Next button, we see the array drive is already built. Finally, click the Apply button to formally generate configuration.

An Array Piece corresponds to a logical drive, we can completely create multiple different RAID-level drives.

Because hot spare plate

4, RAID5 array damage to disk replacement

The RAID5 level array allows damage to a hard disk without causing the loss of data. However, the damaged hard disk must be replaced as soon as possible, otherwise it is not possible to rebuild the data when there is more than 2 hard drives.

The array of RAID5 allows the hard disk of the hard disk. When replacing damaged hard drives, first unplug the hard disk bracket (on the bracket on the bracket), remove the damaged hard disk from the bracket, and then install the finished hard drive on the bay, insert the array. If everything is normal, the RAID5 array will automatically enter the data reconstruction state immediately. This process will perform several times to 20 hours.

Pay attention to you here:

(1) Before replacing the damage to the hard disk, you must view the current state of the array to ensure that other hard drives are in normal ONL online status in addition to the damaged hard disk.

(2) Replacing the bad disc must be timely.

(3) The replacement new hard drive must be intact.

(4) No hard drive cannot be swapped before the array data reconstruction is completed.

5, replacement of hot spare plate

The hot spare disk is always corresponding to the RAID5 array. If it is not an array of RAID5 level, it is not necessary to create a hot spare disk. Because when other hard drives are damaged, the hot spare disk is automatically started, and the hot spare disk that is not damaged in the RAID5 array is required to be reconstructed. Note that non-damaged hard drives in the array cannot be swap during data reconstruction!

Once the data is rebuilt normally, we can replace the damaged hard drive, and the replaced hard drive will automatically become a new hot spare disk.

6, the expansion of the array

If the current array is RAID0 level, and there is a space in the array, we can expand the array. At this time, there is a command to add new disks in the Right-click menu, and we can follow the prompts. . The RAID1 and RAID5 arrays cannot be expanded.

7, array creation and maintenance should pay attention to problems

At present, the popular RAID level is RAID0, RAID1, and RAID5, and the array of RAID1E and RAID5E can also be implemented on IBM's Serverraid card, further increasing the reliability and data security of the array. If the condition allows, we recommend the "RAID5 hot spare" array creation scheme, so we have two chances of replacing the hard drive before the data is lost. For general applications, only RAID5 can also be provided at the same time, can also provide data access performance, reliability, and maximum disk space.

The administrator must often observe the status of the array, including the yellow warning light of the array with an eye and view the status of the drive in the management software. Failure, timely exclude. No matter what level of arrays, it is recommended to do data backups before exclude the failure. Especially important data, you must do a reliable data backup!

Once the hard disk is lowered, the hard drive must be replaced, the replacement hard disk is absolutely unable to use it again in the array, sometimes the hard disk yellow light no longer alarm, but the hard disk is very unreliable!

When purchasing a hard disk array, in addition to the hard drive used, it is recommended to buy a few types of hard drives to properly save the standby. Because the current hardware update is especially fast, if the array hard disk is damaged in a few years, it is possible to buy the same model hard disk. It is not that the market does not find the supply is especially expensive.
