Symptom When you browse a Windows SharePoint Services Web site, you may receive the following error message:
Service Unavailable
Cause This problem may occur if the application pool for a virtual server is not properly configured in the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0. This problem may occur when there is one or more cases:
The application pool is not running. The password used by the application pool account is incorrect. Application Pool Account is not a public member of the IIS_WPG and STS_WPG on the server.
Solution To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
Verify that the application pool has been configured for the virtual server. The default application pool is MSSharePointPortalappPpup. Follow these steps to determine the application pool that the virtual server is using.
Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Service (IIS) Manager. Expand "ServerName", expand "Web Site", right-click the virtual server, and then click Properties. Click the Home Directory tab. The application pool configured for the virtual server is listed in the Application Pool box. Click OK. Verify that the password used by the application pool account is correct. IIS does not automatically poll the password changes in the Active Directory directory service. If the application pool account is a domain account, its password has expired, and after you re-specify a new password for this account, you may receive the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article. Follow these steps to verify that the password used by the application pool account is correct:
Expand "Application Pool" in the Internet Information Services (IIS) manager. Right-click the application pool configured as a virtual server (for example, right-click "MssharePortportalappPPPPPOOL"), and then click Properties. Click the "Identification" tab. In the Password box, type the password used in the application pool account column in the User Name box, and then click OK. In the Confirm Password dialog, type your password again, and then click OK. Verify Application Pool Account is a member of the IIS_WPG group on the server and a member of the STS_WPG group. Choose one of the following methods based on your specific situation.
In the case where SharePoint Portal Server is installed on the member server:
Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management. Expand "Local User and Group" and expand User. Right-click the account used by the virtual server's application pool, and then click Properties. Click the "member belong to the" tab. Verify that IIS_WPG and STS_WPG have appeared in the "member belong to" list. If one of them is not listed or both are not listed, add the IIS_WPG group, STS_WPG group, or two groups according to the specific situation to the list. In the case where SharePoint Portal Server is installed on the domain controller:
Start "Active Directory Users and Computers". Expand User. Right-click the account used by the virtual server's application pool, and then click Properties. Click the "member belong to the" tab. Verify that IIS_WPG and STS_WPG appear in the "member belong to the" list. If one of them is not listed or both are not listed, add the IIS_WPG group, STS_WPG group, or two groups according to the specific situation to the list. Restart IIS to recycle the application pool:
