SUN's development strategy of operating system

Sun is one of the main suppliers of UNIX markets, no matter their software and hardware strategies, it has always been the goal of attention. In January 2002, Sun announced that the INTEL chip announced in its upcoming Solaris 9 operating system. But after three days of this statement, Solaris users argue in BBS and collectively requested to resume the operating system that supports Intel chips. In the face of the user's love for the Solaris system, Sun can only reconsider the development strategy of its operating system. In April 2003, Sun Company issued its adjustment of the operating system development strategy white paper. The following briefly introduces this strategy.

Strategic value orientation

The core of this strategy is to reduce the cost and complexity of IT solutions, which is also the value orientation of its N1 strategy. The N1 strategy will guide Sun's investment and research and development within the next five to ten years, which is the future development direction of IT industry recognized by SUN. The development strategy of Sun's operating system is to obey and serve their N1's big strategy. Please refer to the references after the N1 strategy.

There are two main issues considered by IT managers: One is how to ensure the implementation of the solution, and the other is how to choose your own solution will not be eliminated by the market. In the last ten years of economic prosperity, companies have been investing in IT, and the result is the most best system. When the economy begins to decline, the main problems considered by IT managers are still both, but their implementation is no longer the same.

Investment becomes rational, and the cost must be given priority. The cost is not only a system of system purchase, it is easy to find the cheapest thing, but how this implementation is in the future operation and management? Can this program expand with demand growth? How is the security of this program? Sun's N1 strategy is to look for answers to these issues.

IT managers have to answer these questions, so they must take care of the right system seriously. From low-end cheap systems to high-end expandable, reliable, expensive servers are considered. Sun hopes to provide a completely open system platform for users to choose from to reduce the overall cost and complexity of application implementation through their operating system strategies.

Supported hardware platform

Different hardware platforms often need to be selected when selecting the correct machine for different parts of the system. Sun meets the needs of users by providing different hardware.

The Ultrasparc series servers and workstations can support the main components of the UNIX server market from one to more than 100 processors. SUN continues to vigorously develop the next-generation UltrasParc processor while supporting this product line. The UltraSPARC four generations and five generations will be a better combination of price and performance.

Sun also provides X86 processor-based servers and workstations that simultaneously provide a large number of applications within the SunOnd architecture. Users can choose the Solaris X86 or Linux operating system according to their own needs.

One-stop service for users will meet the different needs of users, and greatly reduce the overall cost of the application. Sun has always adhered to code compatibility to protect users' investment. The open strategy of Sun insisted on ensuring seamless coupling between systems in line with different manufacturers.

Solaris operating system

The Solaris operating system has been more than ten years of history. It supports enterprise-class applications by providing convenient, secure and scalable environments. As a leader in the UNIX environment, Solaris has always been the primary choice for companies publishing applications in modern network environments. What makes Solaris so powerful? Is his usability, scalability, security, and manageability.

Figure 1 shows how the Solaris system passes the close combination of user applications, thereby demonstrating its powerful functions. Security is a powerful support for engineering system architecture. The basic security level implemented by the Solaris operating system is the highest in all operating systems, and it also expands its security features through technologies such as firewalls. Solaris security guarantees the preferred platform for enterprise network applications.

The Solaris operating system supports more than 100 processors that support multiple servers parallel through its cluster feature, which provides users with very good scalability. The Solaris operating system can provide users with 24x7 high reliability services. application

Sun offers the X86 version of the Solaris operating system while continuing to maintain the leading advantage of the Solaris operating system. The same operating system is provided on both platforms and to ensure the user's application is compatible with the source sequence. That is to say, the user writes on one of the platforms, only needs to be recompiled on another platform.

Interoperability of the Solaris operating system and Linux operating system is also enhanced. By providing compatible Linux system libraries, Linux applications will be able to run directly on Solaris X86, which can even be used on the Solaris SPARC platform by simple recompilation.

Linux operating system

Sun supports an open system in accordance with its consistent style. Sun will test its SunOn software on a different Linux system so that users can choose the Linux product you like in selecting Sun's machines and software. The Sun's "Blade" Server can pre-install Linux operating system in accordance with user needs.

how to choose?

Sun provides two hardware platforms, three operating systems, how should users choose? Of course, the user's own needs is the key. The following table wants to help users choose by listing the differences of these operating systems.

Solaris operating system Solaris x86 Linux 24x7 support has 32-bit applications There are no binary code compatible to ensure that there is no system and resource management system built-in system built-in third parties provide protection on Solaris's existing investment Whether there is an existing investment on Linux to support more than 6,600 more than 1000 vertical extensions> 100CPUS 1-4CPUS 1-4CPus level extension can be able to support the source program-level compatible code level for Linux applications And source-level compatible code level and source-compatible EAL4 CAPP (C2) level security have EAL4 LSPP (B1) level security There is no available high version support 9 years 9 years 3 years public hardware support no energy

to sum up

Starting from the "network is computer", the overall policy of Sun has not changed: the connection will be calculated through the network! And for this, we have been providing very good technologies and products, and we have reason to look forward to SUN to make more hardware and software products.
