VMware experience

1, supported guest OS:

VMware supports the following guest OS:

MS-DOS, WIN3.1, WIN9X / ME, WINNT, WIN2000, WINXP, WIN.NET, Linux, FreeBSD, NetWare6, Solaris x86.

Not supported guest os:

BEOS, IBM OS / 2 and OS / 2 WARP, Minix, QNX, Sco Unix, Unixware.

2, VMware simulated hardware

VMware simulated hardware includes: motherboard, memory, hard disk (IDE, and SCSI), DVD / CD-ROM, floppy drive, network card, sound card, serial port, parallel port and USB port. VMware did not simulate a graphics card. VMware provides a package called VMware-Tools for each Guest OS to enhance the display and mouse features of Guest OS.

3. The hardware simulated by VMware is a fixed model, and is independent of the actual hardware of the Host OS. For example, in a machine installed Linux with VMware, you can run the entire Linux Copy to other VMware's machines without having to install it.

4, VMware can use the ISO file as an CD. For example, the Linux ISO file downloaded from the Internet does not need to be installed.

5, VMware provides three options for the GUEST OS:

(1) Persistent

Any operation made in Guest OS operation instantly

(2) Undoable

When Guest OS Shutdown, I will ask if the operation store made

(3) NonPersistend

Any operation made in Guest OS is equal after ShutDown.

If you want to perform a software test or test, this is a very useful feature, you can play, put

Guest OS is not afraid of unlimited time.

6. Two network settings for VMware:

(1) Bridged method

In this way, Guest OS's IP can be set to a separate machine with Host OS, Guest OS is equivalent to a separate machine within the network, other machines within the network can access guest OS, guest OS can also access other networks Machine, of course, bidirectional access to Host OS is not a problem.

(2) NAT mode

This approach can also realize two-way access to the Host OS and Guest OS. However, other machines in the network cannot access guest OS, and guest OS can access other machines within the network with the NAT protocol with the Host OS.

NAT mode IP address configuration method: Guest OS first uses DHCP to automatically obtain IP addresses, the VMware Services in Host OS will assign an IP for Guest OS, and then use fixed IPs every time you start, you can use it directly in Guest OS This IP is fixed.

In general, Bridged methods are most convenient to use. But if the Host OS is Win2000 and the network cable is not plugged, the network is likely to be unavailable (most of which use the machine of the PCI network card), which can only use the NAT mode.

7. VMware uses the Host OS file to simulate the hard disk of the Guest OS. A Guest OS hard drive corresponds to a file in one or more host OS. If you write a 100M file in the guest OS, the virtual hard disk file in the Host OS is increased by 100M. Delete this 100M file in Guest OS, the virtual hard disk file in Host OS will not decrease. This part of this part of this space can continue to be utilized next time. The Shrink feature is also available in VMware-Tools, which can release unused spaces and reduce the capacity of the virtual hard disk file in the Host OS.

In order to reduce the waste of hard disk space, avoid using Shrink, better practices, is to hang another hard disk in Guest OS, such as installing files, and re-partition this hard disk after running. . 8, VMware-Tools

VMware-Tools Enhances the display and mouse features of Guest OS. VMware-Tools comes with the VMware. When installing Guest OS, there is a sentence in VMware's status bar that prompts VMware-Tools without installing, the mouse click this sentence to install VMware-Tools. You can also install: Settings -> VMware Tools Install

If guest os is Windows, VMware-Tools will be automatically installed. If it is Linux, after installation, the VMware-Tools installation file will be in the Mount to the CD-ROM drive (is virtual way, this time is no disc), enter the optical drive Mount Point , Set the file Copy to be installed.

For some guest OS, such as Solaris X86, NetBSD 1.x, OpenBSD 2.x, and Caldera OpenLinux 1.3, VMware does not provide VMware-Tools.

9, in the VMware, do not install the graphic mode, use text mode installation. When you install the XServer, select the default configuration. If you install an error, you don't have to pay. After installation, don't set X, first install VMware-Tools, start X.

10. If you don't use the sound card, don't join the sound card in VMware, the sound card has a little impact on performance.

11. If you do not usually use a CD-ROM drive, you can cancel the CONNECT AT POWER ON option of the CD-ROM drive. When you need it, the optical drive can be "hot plug" at any time.
