Exchange Multi-Data Services SMDS is a broadband network MAN technology based on IEEE 802.6 DQDB (Distributed Queue Dual Bus Distributed Queen Bull), developed by Bellcore.

The transport medium used in SMDS can be fiber or copper wire. At DS-1, its transmission rate is 1.544 Mbps; in DS-3, its transmission rate is 44.736 Mbps. In addition, the SMDS data unit is large, sufficient to package the entire IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.5, and Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI: Fiber Distributed Data Interface) frame. A sending node can send up to 9,188 bytes of Group Customer Data, which are divided into smaller 53-by-band cells to suit the SMDS slot transmission operations in the service provider network. . At the receiving end, the packet cell is again reset into customer data.
