During the installation process, there is a prompt for the installation status. The screen will automatically prompt how much time (in minutes), the installation task has been completed (indicated in a percentage). Replace the tab with the screen prompt, after installing the basic runtime environment, status information to install other software is displayed.

If you choose a migration installation, a migration confirmation screen will appear after selecting the start installation. This migration confirmation screen prompts you some software that is not compatible with AIX 5L Version 5.1, and will be installed in the later installation. If you choose to cancel, it will not continue to complete the migration installation. Restart the machine, otherwise it will continue to be installed. When you have determined the migration installation, the status screen of the installation process will be displayed.

In this process, the installer will do the following: (1) Create a directory structure of the AIX system; (2) Copy the BOS and some files from the installation media to the system; (3) Install all connection devices software.

After the BOS (Basic Operating System) is installed, the system will restart. The AIX operating system then runs by default system parameters. These default system parameters are: the machine date, time, and some other setting parameters set up. After the newly installed BOS system is restarted, run the configuration assistant program (graphics terminal) or the installation assistant program (character terminal). These two tools guides you to complete the configuration of the system installation, such as the system date, time, time, can complete the configuration network, manage system storage, setting system language environment, to manage system storage, and set system locale by installing the system. To create a user, backup system, define printers and installation applications, etc.

1. Use the Configuration Assistant configuration system

For graphics console, the new BOS is turned on and then the configuration assistant is running, as shown in Figure 3 below.

In Figure 3, select the task you need to do, then press the "Next" button to continue configuration. The configuration assistant of the graphical interface is gradually guiding the system administrator to complete each configuration task, and the task is in a logical order. Before using the system, complete all configuration tasks. For example, if the system's page space is less than the number of recommended numbers, the missing page space can cause serious operation problems, so add the page space, the system administrator should select "Manage System Storage and Paging Space", then press the "Next" button. Configure storage space and add page space.

Under the guidance of the Configuration Assistant, you can complete the following tasks: (1) Set the system time zone into the time zone where the location is located, set the correct date and time. (2) Set the root user password. (3) Manage system storage space and page space. (4) Configure network communication. (5) Configure a web server to use a web-based system management to perform the system management command in the web browser. (6) Install the online library service, let the user search online files (strongly recommend that you complete this configuration job, because some applications may have to rely on the service of this document library to implement online manuals and explanations). Moreover, this configuration work can also selectively assist you to install a web browser, web server, and related files.

When exiting the configuration assistant program, it will ask if you want to restart the configuration assistant program when restarting the operating system next time. After exiting the configuration assistant program, the user can start logging in and using AIX 5.1.

When you need to run the configuration assistant program in the future, you can run it if you enter the configassist command on the command line. 2. Use the Installation Assistant to configure the system If the console is set to the character mode, then the newly installed BOS is started, it is running the installation assistant, which is a character interface, as shown in Figure 4.

Figure 4

The installation assistant of the character mode is basically the same as the configuration assistant function of the graphic mode. Only root users can use the installation assistant program. When you need to run the installation configuration program in the future, you can run the install_assist command in the ASCII command line to enter the character installation assistant interface, or run the smit assist through the SMIT tool in the CDE environment to enter the graphics installation assistant interface.

Under the guidance of the Installation Assistant Program, you can complete the following configuration tasks: (1) Set the system time zone to your location, set the correct date and time. (2) Set the root user password. (3) Confirm or change the device you use to install other software. The installation device may be a CD-ROM, a tape device, or a local or remote directory. (4) Manage system storage space and page space. (5) Configure network communication. (6) Change the basic locale or add other locale. (7) Establish an account for other users. (8) Configure the printer and add a print queue for the local printer with the remote printer server. (9) Import any existing volume group. (10) Install other software and applications (11) backup systems. (12) Exit "Install Assistant Program" and log in to the system.

When using the Configuration System tool, we have to pay attention to: (1) If the system is installed over the network installation server, the Configuration Assistant Program or the Installer Program will not appear when the BOS installer is complete. (2) If the system uses system backups to restore installation, or select "Migrating Installation" by you customized BOS installation, or from AIX 4.2 or later, you may not The Configuration Assistant Program or "Install Assistant Program" will be run. (3) Configuration Assistant Program and "Installation Assistant Program" do not include the work required to configure your machine as a server. If you need your system for a specific resource, please refer to the file that is exclusive to the resource. (4) If your terminal type has not been set, the first menu displayed by the ASCII Installer Program is required to enter the terminal type (TTY). If the input terminal type is invalid, the menu will be redisplayed until the valid type is input. (5) If the input valid terminal type does not match your terminal, the next display screen may not be able to read. In this case, press the interrupt button to return to the "Set Terminal Type" screen. For most terminal types, the interrupt key is Ctrl C.

AIX 5L can not only be installed on the PowerPC / Power machine, but also on the 64-bit Intel Architecture (IA-64, an Itanium) machine. Installing AIX on a Itanium-based machine is a 64-bit kernel that there is no 32-bit kernel on the AIX on the ITANIUM system. The ITANIUM system and the Power system application binary interface (ABI) are also different. There is no PTRACE () function in the AIX of the Itanium system, but the application is debugged and tracked through the read and write / proc file system.

1, ready to install AIX 5L on the Itanium machine

IBM's AIX 5L supported hardware platform configuration includes Intel's SDV (Software Development Vehicle) workstation, SDV servers, and other machines on the ITANIUM chip. But AIX5L does not support mixing using different types of memory and processors.

Before installation, it is important to understand the firmware level (level level "of the machine you want to install. To get this information, you must enter the CMOS settings when you start phase and if you have an "Itanium" flag, select the system BIOS option, the firmware level is located in the 3rd field of the BIOS screen. Install the AIX 5L version, for the Itanium machine, 512MB of physical memory is required. AIX 5L will establish the original page space (/ dev / hd6) with a minimum of 512MB. Table 1 shows the installation requirements for the storage space based on Itanium-based AIX 5L version (graphics system).

2, install AIX 5L step on the Itanium machine

The following is the step of installing AIX5L from the ITANIUM machine CD-ROM: (1) Connect the power supply, power the starter machine; (2) put the Operating System disc in the optical drive; (3) When the screen appears EFI boot manager (EFI Boot When the manager is selected, "EFI Shell" is selected with the cursor, and then press ENTER to appear "Shell>" prompt. (4) The installer assigns a number similar to "FS0" looks like "FS0" to the CD-ROM and is displayed. (5) Enter the following command at the "Shell>" prompt, set the path to the current directory: shell> set path (6) Enter the CD-ROM number in the "Shell>" prompt (ie displayed in step 4 CD-ROM number, such as FS0.fs1), "FS0>" prompt (assuming the CD-ROM number is FS0). (7) Enter the boot command from the "RS0>" prompt, and boot the AIX 5L from the CD-ROM. (8) Press the F1 key to select the console, then press the Enter key to continue. (9) Press "1" to select English as a installation language, then press ENTER to continue. (10) Press "0" to select Start the installation, and then press ENTER to continue. (11) Press the ENTER key to confirm the installation. (12) After a while, the installer prompts you to replace "Extended Hardware Drivers CD" and follow the prompt to install the hardware driver. (13) Continue to install, the system will prompt you to replace the operating system CD2 and CD3, which may take 30 to 50 minutes. (14) When the installation is completed, the system will reboot and start the AIX system. After a few minutes, "Installation Assistant" will automatically run, and different management configuration tasks can be done through "Installation Assistant", for example: install other LPPS, configuration Network and other universal configuration tasks. (15) In the Installation Assistant menu option, turn off the Installation Assistant Automatic Starting item, no longer allowing it to automatically run when booting AIX, and then exits the Install Assistant program.

3. Activate the processor specified by the license (license) on the ITANIUM machine

By default, the AIX 5L of the Itanium platform provides a license (License) using a 1 processor (CPU), that is, when the AIX 5L is started for the first time on the Itanium machine, only one processor (CPU) work, Even if your machine has multiple processors installed.

If the user purchases the AIX 5L operating system with multiple processor licenses for the ITANIUM machine, other processors must be activated to enable the number of processors that the available processors reach the number of processors specified.
