Sun has selected the "Community Development & Distribution License" (CDDL) mode for its "Open Solaris Project" and will announce the source code of DTRACE technology to the developer immediately. But Sun plans to retain Solaris's trademark rights and related issues, so commercial Solaris software will continue.
SUN submitted CDDL to the Open Source Association (OSI) in December 2004, but did not disclose it in which products will be used in. OSI approved CDDL earlier this month. Tom said that all source code of Solaris 10 will not be open. All open source needs to wait until the second half of 2005. At that time, developers will be able to obtain all the files needed to create, develop, run open source version Solaris.
The source code of DTRACE technology will also be open to developers. This is a new feature in Solaris 10 that provides a window for developers and system administrators to understand the operating system and the application software. Sun will publish the source code for DTrace technology at www.opensolaris.org, but the compiler and other support files are not included, which will provide these tools later.
Tom said that some Solaris 10 source code ━━ is primarily a third-party driver. Since Sun does not have the right to open their source code, it will be provided to the developer in a binary code. These binaries can be used in any version of open source Solaris.
Tom said that Sun has an open source Solaris community consisting of more than 100 members. Sun also established an advisory committee to formulate the rules of the community. But Sun will decide which code can be included in the commercial version of Solaris, which code will be part of the open source version of Solaris.
But many Linux and open source communities are not satisfied with Sun company using CDDL because it is not compatible with GPL. The CDDL contains no requirements in the GPL, and files published using the CDDL cannot be applied in a file with the GPL release.
