Frame Relay is a high-performance WAN protocol that runs in the physical layer and data link layer of the OSI reference model. It provides higher performance and more efficient transmission efficiency through multipath converters and routers.

Frame Relay is a packet switching technology that is a simplified version of X.25. It improves the ability of terminal station dynamically sharing network media and available bandwidth. The frame relays use two of the following two packet techniques: variable length packets and statistical multiplexing techniques. It does not guarantee data integrity, so you need to delete the packet when a network congestion occurs. But in practical applications, it has more reliable data transmission performance.

The frame relay frame structure provides address information to each frame with the "virtual circuit" mechanism. The virtual circuit of the frame relay is an end-to-end logical link that provides a bidirectional communication path between the terminal devices and uniquely identified by the data link connection identifier DLCI. The frame relays use multiplexed techniques to multiple virtual circuits into a single physical circuit to achieve connection between the user. This performance can reduce the complexity of the device and connection network multiplex terminal devices. The virtual circuit can transmit any number of intermediate converters located in the frame relay packet conversion network.
