The purpose of MPOA is to effectively transmit unicast data between subnets in the LANE environment. MPOA integrates Lane and NHRP to keep LANE, while the data path does not require a router, the allowed subnet and Internet network layer protocols between the subnets. In addition, in different protocols, network technologies, and IEEE 802.1 virtual LAN environments, MPOA provides an efficient synthetic bridge and routing structure through ATM. MPOA can use bridges and routing information at the same time to locate the best exit. MPOA allows network layer routing and data transmission, physically separated, called virtual routing technology.

Based on ATM UNI signaling, LAN simulation and next hop parsing protocol NHRP, MPOA includes two parts: MPOA Client (MPC) and MPOA Server (MPS), as well as related protocols required for communication and service reception.

MPS is the logical component of the router, which is applied only to router with the next hop server NHS and one or more LECS interfaces. From LEC to LANE, MPOA enables the data and control paths on the router unchanged. MPS and routers, LEC, NHS, and other MPOA components are interacting with each other, and single MPS corresponds to a LEC.
