WAN (WAN) is a large-scale computer network that involves the entire world network. Usually, WAN connects multiple smaller networks such as local area network (LAN) or regional network (Man). The most popular WAN of the world is the Internet. Some parts of the interior of the Internet are also a wide area network. WAN can be rented by private ownership or rental to server, including public networks (user sharing).

To confidentiality and secure communication, organizations typically use virtual private networks (VPNs) depend on public exchange data network (PSDN). Under the WAN sharing structure, VPN adopts an encrypted and other technologies to enable organizations to obtain their own private networks.

In contrast, WAN generally uses a variety of different network technologies and devices such as key technology, including SONET, Frame Relay, X.25, ATM, and PPP. The WAN technology and protocols are basically belonging to the data link layer protocol (second layer) defined by each organization. The main organizations in this area are: Define the IETF of PPP, define the ITU-T of ATM, frame relay, define ISO of X.25 and SONET.
