Latex is a semi-professional typographic software. It is said that it is "half professional" because 1) It can discharge the book and article of professional publishing level; 2) It is not prepared for professional typographic staff, but the author of books / articles. I am currently mainly used by latex typography books and graduation design, because layouts and content can be controlled by me. If you use it articles, then which magazine (non-academic journal) will accept the latex manuscript;)
Learning Latex is not difficult, you can get your hand in the afternoon, you can be skilled in a two week. For me, the biggest advantage of Latex is not to discharge beautiful mathematical formulas (I can't use mathematical tools), but it's the input file and intermediate files are text formats, which can be easily controlled and managed. For example, I now use the CVS to manage the progress of the graduation papers, and also wrote one or two gadgets to help convert the original book index. Multiplayer collaboration and version management of CVS and large Latex documents are not issues.
At present, Latex has been able to handle Chinese very well, but it is not as good as Word when dealing with the punctuation. For example, it will not put: "and". Automatically merged to only one.
