Dialectics of institutionalization and flexibility
A large question of improving process is concerned about loss of flexibility. People who oppose the process improvement, always take "living" as a block, in fact, these words should be in order, that is, learn, after use, and live again.
The goal of process improvement is to seek institutional and flexible appropriate balance, with the system is flexible.
The following three metaphor can give us a good revelation:
· Metaphor 1: Trees
A tree is branched in a 50-meter-high place, which can be grown into trees in the ten meters high.
A metaphor one tells us that flexibility is based on certain rules, excessively emphasizes flexibility, and companies can only repeat (shrubs) at a low level. Applying flexibility on a certain rule, companies can grow up (trees).
· Metaphor 2: Stove
In winter, there is no stove will be cold, with a stove, we often feel its existence, it is just a heat in silently. But don't touch it, otherwise it will be hot. In addition, the stove is fair to people.
The ratio I tell us that the rule (stove) is indispensable, it brings us interest (warmth), once we adapt, we can't even feel its existence, but we can't make it, otherwise it will be punished.
· Metaphor 3: Traffic
If there is no traffic rule, the road will definitely congestion, no benefit to anyone; there is a traffic rule, everyone "sometimes" is inconvenient, but the end people can reach their destination.
The metaphor three tells us that the system sometimes sacrifies partial and short-term benefits, but is advantageous for overall and long-term development.
Is the old culture compatible with a new system? Does the old values support new systems? Is the old typical represent a new system? In most cases, the answer is probably worthy of questioning.
