Remote Monitoring (RMON) is a standard monitoring specification that allows all network monitoring and console systems to switch between network monitoring data. RMON provides more freedom for network administrators to choose a console and network monitoring detectors that meet special network needs.

RMON initial design is used to resolve issues from a central point to manage each LAN and remote sites. The RMON specification is extended by SNMP MIB. In RMON, a set of network statistics and performance indicators are included in different monitors (or called detectors) and console systems. The result data can be used to monitor network utility, so providing a funding basis for network rules and running, and assisting network errors diagnostics.

There are two versions of RMON: RMON V1 and RMONV2. RMON V1, can be found in the current use of more extensive network hardware, defined 9 MIB group services to basic network monitoring; RMON V2 is an extension of MRON, focusing on the multi-flow layer above the MAC layer, which mainly emphasizes IP traffic and horizontal flow of applications. RMON V2 allows network management applications to monitor all network layers, which is different from RMONV1, which only allows monitoring of Mac and its following information.
